Palestine contains many sites that are holy to Muslims (as well as many that are holy to Christians and Jews, hence much of the religious conflict in the region). The most revered to Muslims are the Dome of the Rock and al-Aqsa mosques, built in Jerusalem on the site at which Muhammad is believed to have ascended to heaven on a night's journey known as al-Isra' wa al-Miraj .
During the late nineteenth century, Jewish immigrants had been landing to Palestine in increasing numbers as they fled European persecution after World War I and II and started to build until nowadays many illegal settlements across the country.
Many Palestinians were displaced after the 1948 and 1967 wars. About 300,000 Palestinians left in Transjordan (later Jordan) after Israel occupied the territories of Palestine in the Six-Day War and has since maintained control and established a military administration throughout the area.
Between 1967 and 1977 thousands of palestinians were evicted from East Jerusalem and replaced by Jewish immigrants, and many others lost their residency rights under the government of Benjamin Netanyahu.
